Offspring and When We Swam
My latest Netflix binge is the Australian show, “Offspring.”
I don’t know what I like best about it: the very real portrayal of what it feels like in your head when you have severe anxiety; the injection of offbeat humor into serious life circumstances; the all-too-real love/hate relationship of siblings; the “Scrubs” style bits of acted-out fantasies and possible scenarios; or the infectious folk-pop opening theme song.
The theme is the chorus of a song called “When We Swam” by Thao Nguyen (I had to look it up, of course, because it’s been stuck in my head for about a week now). Thao is a singer-songwriter from Virginia (her parents are Vietnamese refugees). This is the video for the song, by Thao and The Get Down Stay Down (her band):

And now the song will be stuck in your head, too (you’re welcome) and the only cure is to watch the show (okay, it’s not a cure, the song will still be stuck in your head, but it’s a good show so watch it anyway).

I know, right? The last TV theme song that did this to me was “Greenback Boogie” from the show Suits! Let me know what you think if you watch Offspring! (I think the title of the show is genius, too, because it’s about an obstetrician – literally delivering offspring – and also about her own siblings – the offspring of her parents).

Oh, I never got into Modern Family. Offspring isn’t like my FAVORITE show or anything, just my current binge because, quite frankly, I’m running out of good shit to watch on Netflix! It’s good, and I do like the reality of the anxiety of the main character, but there are other shows I would recommend before this one.

There is one I would recommend a lot called Fleabag, but I don’t think it was Netflix I watched it on.
